Innovative PMM Narda EMC test instrument range now available from MDL

MDL Technologies range of EMC pre-compliance test instruments has been expanded with the company’s appointment as exclusive UK distributor for the complete range of EMC products from PMM.

9010 Fast EMI Receiver
The 9010F high-speed receiver is part of the EMC product range from PMM, which is now exclusively distributed in the UK by MDL.

The instruments will be particularly useful for lighting and white goods manufacturers but are suited to all EMC applications. They include field probes and receivers (pre-compliant and fully compliant) as well as new multi-standard single-path line impedance stabilisation networks (LISNs).

“PMM provides a range of quality EMC products using innovative technology, but at affordable prices,” said MDL managing director Mark Lucock. “They are ideal for small to medium-size manufacturers that need some pre-compliance EMC capability, but couldn’t afford to have it in-house until now.”

Products include the all-in-one EP-600 series electric field probes. These exceptionally small, optically coupled, broadband isotropic probes have wide frequency ranges from 5 kHz to 26.5 GHz and up to 66 dB dynamic range. With a spherical symmetrical layout, they are suitable for all EMC / EMI applications.

RAD pmmAlso available is the new 9010F high-speed receiver with advanced analogue to digital conversion, which uses FFT frequency spectrum analysis, cutting test times from hours to seconds. Fully compliant with the CISPR 16-1-1 standard, it is expandable up to 18 GHz with external modules.

Another innovative new product is the FR4003 field receiver, which is a replacement for traditional rod antennas. With an internal 30 MHz CISPR 16-1-1 fully compliant receiver, this can be connected to a PC in stand-alone mode or via a fibre optic link to a PMM receiver, but can still use a traditional coaxial cable if necessary.

Unlike other EMC equipment manufacturers who generally make a charge for their software, software is included free of charge with all PMM instruments, providing a cost effective solution to EMC testing.

Hipot tester from MDL can measure ten channels simultaneously

The Chroma 19020 dielectric withstand test instrument from MDL Technologies can boost productivity by measuring Hipot leakage current on ten channels at the same time. The new instrument can be used to carry out AC/DC Hipot and insulation resistance safety tests in a production environment, producing significant savings in speed and space.

On a production line the items to be tested are often close together, with a risk of being damaged if high voltage is applied to adjacent components at the same time. The 19020 eliminates this risk by synchronising its high voltage outputs.

A master / slave link enables up to ten units to be controlled, making 100 channels in total. The unit also includes powerful flashover and open / short circuit check functions.

Also available from MDL is the twin-port Chroma 19032, a five-in-one production safety analyser that can perform AC/DC Hipot, insulation resistance, grounding resistance and dynamic leakage current testing. Suitable for testing medical equipment, it accepts a range of plug-in cards with different human body equivalent circuits as specified in the safety directives.

Another dielectric withstand test instrument, and one of the smallest on the market, is the Chroma 19070. This can perform either AC Hipot tests only or AC / DC / IR Hipot testing with insulation resistance measurements to 5kV AC and 6kV DC, with a resolution of 1V.

“We can also supply higher voltage Hipot testers up to 20kV DC,” said MDL managing director Mark Lucock.

LED driver test equipment introduced by MDL

Drivers are a key element in the performance and reliability of LEDs, and an extensive range of equipment for testing LED drivers is now available from MDL Technologies. The Chroma instruments include programmable AC and DC sources, high precision power meters and an LED load simulator specifically designed for LED power drivers.

The 61500 Series advanced programmable AC power sources have output powers ranging from 500 to 2000 VA and offer AC, DC and AC+DC output modes. With a programmable voltage and frequency slew rate, they can measure RMS voltage, current, power, PF, VA, VAR, crest factor, peak and inrush current.

The Chroma 66200 Series are high precision digital power meters with a wide range of voltage, current and power parameters. User-defined criteria provide automatic pass/fail indications, and THD, inrush current and energy measurements are available.

Also offered are complete automated test systems suitable for use in R & D and quality assurance qualification as well as on the production line. One example is the Chroma 58158 AC/DC LED integrated test system which combines a programmable AC power source and digital power meter, and can integrate with a flexible optical test platform equipped with integrating sphere, photo detector etc.

MDL can also supply a 46 page guide to testing LED power drivers. Particularly useful because of the dearth of test standards for LED drivers, the guide produced by Chroma gives test specifications for a range of output parameters, such as output voltage and current, ripple current, dimming current and turn-on overshoot current. It also lists useful definitions of the relevant terminology.

High power electronic loads from MDL for automated testing of power supplies

High power electronic loads from MDL for automated testing of power supplies

Designed for the automated testing of a wide range of power supplies and batteries, the new Chroma 63200A series DC electronic loads provide ultra high precision voltage and current measurement. They also offer high power ratings from 4 kW to 24 kW and up to 2000 A in a single unit.

Available from MDL Technologies, the programmable loads can be linked with up to 10 units in parallel in a master/slave configuration to produce a total power capacity of 240 kW. They also have dynamic synchronous control to enable the generation of complex multi-channel transient profiles.

“The Chroma 63200A range offers the highest accuracy of any high power electronic load on the market, and also the highest power density, at 6 kW in a 4U chassis,” said MDL managing director Mark Lucock.

Suitable for testing AC/DC and server power supplies, DC/DC converters, EV batteries, automotive charging stations and other power electronics sources, the units have a 300% peak overpower capability for fault condition simulations in automotive batteries, fuel cells etc.

The loads have a user defined waveform (UDW) capability and external signal control functions for simulating real-world custom waveforms. An additional function is dynamic auto-frequency sweep for detecting a worst case output deviation across a wide range of current frequencies.

Available with voltage ratings of 150 V, 600 V or 1200 V, the 63200A series can be controlled remotely using a USB connection or via optional Ethernet or GPID interfaces.

Also included is a digitising function for recording transients in both voltage and current waveforms. Other notable features include short circuit simulation and a user programmable 255 sequential front panel input status. Overcurrent, overpower and over-temperature protection are included, as well as alarms for overvoltage and polarity reverse.
